ADVICE FROM JIM PARQUE
Your career depends on what you learn today
| Although mechanics are important to put the hitter in an optimal power and quickness position, great hitters exhibit rhythm and timing. Throughout my career I knew I could dominate a mechanically inclined hitter that concentrated on his form because he became robotic and could not make quick adjustments. If the hitter’s rhythm was in tune with my delivery and his timing did not change from pitch to pitch, it usually resulted in a hard hit baseball. One key is to look at the hitter’s front hip. When I played for the White Sox, our hitting coach Von “The Hit Doctor” Joshua, showed me the all important mechanic to dissecting any hitter. He stated the front hip must stay strong and closed through the release. If I could focus on the front hip during the swing, I would be able to immediately find any hole in the swing. |

This proved priceless information as I won 14 big league games.
The front hip dictates rhythm and timing. If it blows open too early, the swing becomes elongated. If a hitter has enough strength to power his hands against a strong front hip, quickness and body awareness increase- giving the hitter a landmark from which to judge his movements. This will ensure the batter can rhythmically time and judge any pitch- gaining invaluable reaction time.
All hitting mechanics require rhythm and timing. Without these two key ingredients, a player will never see lasting results."
